Are you learning a new language? Another tongue Are you learning a new language?

Another tongue is a fun book that accurately describes what it’s like being in a new place with a language you don’t know.

Your mother tongue is the first language you learn. Your first words are simple and get more complex as you grow and learn. Eventually, you get to learn a lot of them. Different countries have different mother tongues. You may not understand it at first, but you slowly begin to learn it. You mix up words and make mistakes, but they will eventually make sense. They will help you connect and communicate with others.

Written based on the author’s own experience from emigrating from Ukraine to the US, Yevgenia perfectly captures the journey of learning a new language. The illustrations pair beautifully with the text and depict the emotions that can arise when being surrounded by a new language.

Many thanks to @holidayhousepeachtree for sending me a copy of the book!

The Sea We Call Home is a heartfelt story about sa The Sea We Call Home is a heartfelt story about saving our oceans.

When Little Gnouf and Mirabelle find a baby whale washed ashore, they just know they have to help! They tried to push it back in the ocean, but it was too heavy. A sand crab tells them to wait for the tide, so they free him of the net while they wait. A big whale emerges and the baby whines. Little Gnouf asks the seagulls to help life the whale into the ocean. When they finally get it back into the water, they are taken on a magical journey through the ocean.

This is such a beautiful book that shows the devastation our trash causes to animals and why it’s so important to protect our oceans. It’s a great story to teach kids to advocate for animals and do their best to help them. The ocean is a vast and magical place - let’s keep it that way.

Many thanks to @pubspotlight for sending me a copy of the book! 🩵

The House is a beautiful story that blends nature The House is a beautiful story that blends nature with manmade buildings.

The house was built in the summer and soon a family moved it. The family looked after the house and the house looked after the family. But on a stormy night, lightning hit the house and it caught on fire. The family moved away and the house was left all alone. Who would live in the house now? Just as the house lost hope, it also gained new residents. Nature overtakes the house with plants and animals, and suddenly, the house is filled with warmth again.

This story reminds me of a road near the house I grew up in. The road further down past all the houses always flooded so they closed it. Now, when you travel down it you hit a spot where there is no more asphalt, but instead, the road just ends and turns into grass and flowers. Just like the house, some things are forgotten or unused and nature takes back control. It’s a great reminder not only of what existed before we built all these things, but what will happen once they are forgotten.

It’s also a beautiful ode to healing after a tragedy. After the family moves out the house is worried no one will live in it again and no one will care for it. But, after a long winter, the house realizes it’s never stopped being a house - it still shelters and protects.

Many thanks to @pubspotlight for sending me a copy of the book! 🩵
