I love making these DIY maracas for our Cinco de Mayo celebration, but you can make them at any time in the year. They work great for other celebrations and even music lessons. Trust me, your kid will be shaking these things for hours!

How To Make DIY Maracas

1. Choose your egg
Pick a plastic egg that doesn’t have any holes so your rice stays safely tucked inside.

Open the egg and pour in a small amount of dry rice. Don’t overfill it, you want room for that satisfying shake.

Use clear tape to let the bright egg colors shine, or switch to washi tape for patterns and personality.

Variations For These Maracas

Use washi tape. Use washi tape to cover the entire maraca in a festive pattern. Or, kids can mix and match patterns and colors.

Switch out the rice. Instead of rice, try dried beans for a louder sound or small dried pastas, like orzo, for a sharper sound. You can even use popcorn kernels!

Cinco De Mayo Books

My favorite Cinco de Mayo book is Marco’s Cinco de Mayo by Lisa Bullard. It’s a great book to teach kids the different ways people celebrate Cinco de Mayo. Check out some more of my favorite Cinco de Mayo books:
