Inspired by the author’s real experience at an inner-city elementary school in the UK, Yasmin created a story that promotes diversity, community, and culture. When South Asian kids who had names like Anum and Saad came up with names like Alan and Sarah for a teddy bear, Yasmin wondered why none of the kids chose names like their own. So, she created this beautiful book that celebrates Muslim culture and gives kids a book with characters that look like them. When Abdullah gets a teddy bear for Eid, he can’t decide what to name it. Others offer names like Roger, Hercules, Henry, Elizabeth, and more, but none of them felt right in his heart. It isn’t until Abdullah thinks about his family’s stories and traditions that he comes up with the perfect name for the bear. But, even though they are different and come from different places, they have some qualities that are shared. They are both team players. They both look fabulous in green. It shows kids that even though you make look different and come from different places, you can still have similar qualities, like being kind and working with others. While some kids make fun of her freckles, Pecosita loves her freckles - they are her favorite part of herself 🩷 This is such a beautiful, empowering book for kids! Beauty standards today make it hard for kids (and adults) to love every part of themselves, so it’s incredible to see books like this one that show kids that are differences make us beautiful.
