How To Make An Ice Fishing Sensory Bin
March 24, 2026
This ice fishing sensory bin combines hands-on sensory play with learning and problem-solving, making it the perfect sensory learning activity for kids. This sensory activity uses simple supplies you likely already own, like small toy fish, salt, and water, making it a budget-friendly activity for families.
This ice fishing sensory bin is a great activity for kids if you’re looking for a fun sensory bin for toddlers and preschoolers that builds fine motor skills. Kids will problem-solve on how to use salt to melt the ice and save the fish. My favorite part about this sensory bin is that the salt will melt the ice enough to trap the string and the cold will freeze it in with the fish. This way, the string acts as a fishing pole and kids can pull the frozen fish out of the water.

I love to pair this ice fishing sensory bin with a fun fish-themed treat, like these fish bowl jello cups . This sensory bin is also a great one to pair with Dr. Seuss’ One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish. Pair it with this free One Fish Two Fish printable or these One Fish Two Fish-themed jello cups.

What You’ll Need For This Ice Fishing Sensory Bin
Step-By-Step Instructions
1. Freeze small toy fish and water in a muffin tin.
2. Fill a bin with water dyed blue with food coloring and place the frozen fish inside. Don’t fully submerge them.

3. Sprinkle a little salt onto the ice.
4. Lay a piece of string or twine across the salted ice.

5. Wait 30–60 seconds.
6. Gently lift the string to “fish” the ice out of the water. The salt helps the ice melt just enough to trap the string, then the cold turns it back into ice again.

7. As the ice melts, let kids rescue the fish and play with them in the bin.
