Step-By-Step Instructions For This Easter Activity For Kids

2. Shape the eggs: Roll out the dough to about 0.5 cm (¼ inch) thickness. Cut out egg shapes using a cookie cutter or a free-hand it with a knife. Use a straw to poke a small hole at the top — this will be for the ribbon. You can add texture before drying by using bottle caps, lace, stamps, or fingerprints!

3. Drying: There are two ways you can dry the salt dough:

Oven drying: 100°C (210°F) for 1.5–2 hours, flipping halfway through; or

Air drying: 24–48 hours, depending on thickness and humidity.

Pick one method to dry your salt dough before going on the to next step.

4. Decorating: Once fully dry, paint the eggs in pastel shades (gouache or acrylic paints work best). You can also seal the eggs with a clear varnish for durability and shine.

5. Add the ribbon: Cut a small piece of ribbon that is long enough to hand the ornament. Thread it through the hole at the top of the egg and tie a knot or a small bow so the egg can hang beautifully.

Important Notes For This Craft

Painting the dough: Acrylic and gouache paints work best on salt dough, but food coloring can also be used.

Getting creative: Kids can get creative with these salt dough Easter eggs by creating various textures and designs on their eggs. Decorate them with flowers or turn them into your favorite character – the possibilities are endless!

Drying: Ensure the salt dough is completely dry before painting. If it is still wet, it will affect how the paint looks and sticks to the dough.
