Beautiful Blackbird is a tale from the Ila- speaki Beautiful Blackbird is a tale from the Ila- speaking people of Zambia.

A long time ago, the bird of Africa were all colors, but none of them had any marks of black. All of the birds through that blackbird was the most beautiful and wanted to be colored black like him. Blackbird colors all the birds with stripes and dots of white.

This is such a beautiful story about appreciating one’s heritage. It teaches that one’s beauty comes from within and that you don’t have to look like others to be beautiful.

Kin: Rooted in Hope Kin is a collection powerful Kin: Rooted in Hope

Kin is a collection powerful poems and stunning artwork that tells the story of the author’s and illustrator’s family history, one that was shaped by enslavement and freedom. Their family tree could only be traced back about 5 generations, as with many African Americans families with roots in slavery. Carole and Jeffery conjured up the voices of their kin, and created an empowering story about loss, erasure, and reclamation.

This book is recommended for ages 10 and up.
