How To Make A Backyard Butterfly Hunt Activity
April 6, 2026
This backyard butterfly hunt activity is the perfect way to get kids out in nature! Kids will hunt around the backyard for butterflies and “catch” them in their net. Then, they can use a magnifying glass to observe each butterfly.

I especially love this butterfly hunt activity because I’m an animal advocate and I don’t feel that there is a need to actually catch butterflies, even if you are letting them go. With this butterfly activity, kids still get to catch and observe “butterflies,” and no real butterflies are harmed. It also teaches kids to live in harmony with nature!
I love to pair this butterfly hunt activity with these butterfly garden waffles. This fun themed breakfast gets kids excited about the butterfly hunt. Then, I also love to have my kids collect flowers so they can make these adorable nature butterfly crafts later in the day.
