Turn the letter X into a pretend X-ray with this fun alphabet craft. Kids build a black letter X and add paper bones while exploring early literacy and science.
● Black construction paper
● White construction paper
● Scissors
● Glue stick or school glue
Begin by cutting a large X from black construction paper. Thick lines work well because they create space for the bone shapes.
A printed template can help younger children become familiar with the correct letter shape. Older preschoolers may enjoy tracing the letter independently before cutting.
2. Cut Out Four White Bone ShapesNext, cut four bone shapes from white construction paper.
Each bone can be made from a thin rectangle and two rounded ends attached to the rectangle.
These shapes resemble cartoon-style bones that children easily recognize.
3. Arrange the Bones Along the Letter XPlace one bone along each arm of the X. Two bones sit on the upper arms and two on the lower arms.
Spacing the bones along the letter gives the appearance of bones visible inside an X-ray image.
Children may experiment with positioning before gluing, which encourages problem-solving and spatial awareness.
4. Glue the Bones to the LetterApply glue to the back of each bone and press it onto the black letter X.
Allow the alphabet craft to dry completely. The finished project resembles an X-ray picture with bones shining against a dark background.
