     Black marker

     Scissors

     Glue stick

Instructions

1. Cut Out the Letter U

Start by cutting a large uppercase U from construction paper. The letter should be wide enough to hold several raindrops on one side and an umbrella top on the other.

For younger children, an adult can trace the letter first. Older preschoolers may practice drawing their own uppercase U before cutting. This strengthens letter formation skills; a major benefit of the letter craft for preschoolers.

2. Cut Out the Umbrella Top

Time to take this from an alphabet craft to a weather craft for preschoolers. Cut out the rounded top of an umbrella from construction paper. The bottom edge can be scalloped to resemble fabric folds. The shape should be large enough to sit across the top of one side of the U.

Using a black marker, draw vertical lines from the top center down toward the scalloped edges. These lines represent the umbrella’s support ribs and add visual detail to the spring craft for kids.

3. Cut Out Raindrop Shapes

From blue construction paper, cut out several raindrop shapes. Four to six drops work well, depending on the size of the letter.

Encourage children to observe the teardrop shape and its curved lines. Cutting smaller shapes challenges hand control, supporting fine motor development within this uppercase U activity. At this point, all the pieces for the U is for umbrella paper craft are ready to go.

4. Glue the Umbrella Top to the Letter U

Apply glue to the bottom edge of the umbrella top and attach it to the top of one arm of the uppercase U. Position it so it looks like the U is holding or standing beneath the umbrella.

This placement visually connects the letter shape to the umbrella handle concept, reinforcing the purpose of the letter U craft.

5. Glue the Raindrops Down the Other Side

Glue the raindrops vertically along the opposite side of the U. Spacing them evenly creates the appearance of rain falling beside the umbrella.

The finished U is for umbrella paper craft clearly demonstrates that “U is for Umbrella,” making the weather craft for preschoolers a strong visual reinforcement tool for literacy centers or alphabet walls.
