How To Make An Ice Fishing Sensory Bin

Recipe by stacie

This ice fishing sensory bin invites kids to build fine motor skills while learning about science and problem-solving.

  • Total Time25 minutes + freeze time
  • Yield1 ice fishing sensory bin 1x

Materials

  • Small toy fish
  • Water
  • Blue food coloring
  • Muffin tin
  • Salt
  • String or twine

Instructions

  1. Freeze small toy fish and water in a muffin tin.
  2. Fill a bin with water dyed blue with food coloring and place the frozen fish inside. Don’t fully submerge them.
  3. Sprinkle a little salt onto the ice.
  4. Lay a piece of string or twine across the salted ice.
  5. Wait 30–60 seconds.
  6. Gently lift the string to “fish” the ice out of the water. The salt helps the ice melt just enough to trap the string, then the cold turns it back into ice again.
  7. As the ice melts, let kids rescue the fish and play with them in the bin.
