These kid-friendly dot cakes are the most fun and easy dessert for kids to make! Simple, colorful, and perfect for birthday parties and sweet celebrations.

Ingredients

Scale

1 box Funfetti cake mix

Ingredients from the back of the box- water, oil, and eggs

1 cup butter

5 cups powdered sugar

2 tsp. vanilla extract

2 tbsp. milk

Pinch of salt

1 large container of Nonpareil sprinkles

Paper ice cream cups

Instructions

Preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.

Prepare the cake, according to box directions.

Pour the cake batter into a parchment lined jelly roll pan.

Bake for 18-20 minutes, until top is golden and the cake is baked through in the center.

Allow the cake to cool.

Meanwhile, make the frosting.

Beat the butter with your mixer.

Add about half of the powdered sugar, and mix to combine.

Add the salt, vanilla, and a splash of the milk. Mix to combine.

Add the remaining powdered sugar, and mix until everything is well combined.

If needed, add another splash of milk and mix to combine.

Add the prepared frosting to a piping bag with a large round tip.

To assemble the cakes, use one of the cups to cut a circle out of the cake.

Add the circle to the bottom of another cup, pressing the cake down into the cup.

Add a swirl of frosting.

Cut out another circle cake piece and add it to the cup.

Top with another swirl of frosting and smooth it out evenly.

Pour the sprinkles onto a plate and press the top frosting into the sprinkles. Squeeze the cup gently so your cake doesn’t fall out

Repeat for all of the cups.

Notes

Watch the cake. Since we are cooking the cake in a non-traditional way, keep an eye on it to ensure it doesn’t burn. Mine cooked for about 18 minutes, but your cook time will vary depending on the type of cake you purchase and your oven settings.

The nonpareil sprinkles are basically the appeal of these dot cakes, but if you are sharing these with kids, it might be easier to only add a few or use different sprinkles that are easier to chew. Any kind of sprinkle can work – just dip the cup into the sprinkles for a beautiful dot cake.

Allow the cake to cool. This is the most crucial part. A warm cake will melt the frosting right off and you’ll have nothing to put the sprinkles on!
