Recipe by stacie

These easy salt dough Easter egg ornaments are a beautiful DIY Easter decoration that will look amazing at your spring parties. Using simple materials that you already own, you can create these gorgeous crafts this Easter.

  • Total Time35 minutes + 2 hours-2 day dry time depending on drying method

Materials

  • 2 cups flour
  • 1 cup fine salt
  • 1 cup water
  • Optional: pastel food coloring or paints for decorating
  • Ribbon (for hanging the eggs)
  • Mixing bowl

    • Rolling pin
    • Egg-shaped cookie cutter (or a knife and a template)
    • Straw (for making holes)
    • Paintbrushes for decorating
    • Cup with water for rinsing paintbrushes
    • Palette for mixing colors

Instructions

1. Prepare the dough

    • In a bowl, combine 2 cups of flour and 1 cup of salt.
    • Gradually add 1 cup of water while mixing.
    • Knead with your hands until the dough becomes smooth, elastic, and non-sticky.

2. Shape the eggs

    • Roll out the dough to about 0.5 cm (¼ inch) thickness.
    • Cut out egg shapes using a cookie cutter or a knife with a template.
    • Use a straw to make a small hole at the top — this will be for the ribbon.
    • You can add texture before drying — using bottle caps, lace, stamps, etc.

3. Drying: Choose one method:

  • Oven drying: 100°C (210°F) for 1.5–2 hours, flipping halfway through.
  • Air drying: 24–48 hours, depending on thickness and humidity.

4. Decorating – Once fully dry:

  • Paint the eggs in pastel shades (gouache or acrylic paints work best).
  • Optional: seal with a clear varnish for durability and shine.

5. Add the ribbon

• Cut a small piece of ribbon.

• Thread it through the hole at the top of the egg.

• Tie a knot or a small bow so the egg can hang beautifully.
