How To Make A Butterfly Nature Collage

Recipe by stacie

Children create butterfly wings from real petals and leaves in this butterfly nature collage. It’s a creative flower activity that blends outdoor discovery with art.

  • Total Time30 minutes + dry time
  • Yield1 butterfly nature collage 1x

Materials

  • Cardboard or thick craft paper
  • Marker or paint pen
  • School glue or craft glue
  • Flower petals
  • Leaves
  • Grass clippings
  • Scissors (optional for cutting out butterfly)
  • Hole punch (optional)
  • String or yarn (optional for hanging)

Instructions

1. Draw the Butterfly Outline

Start by drawing a large butterfly shape on a piece of cardboard using a marker. The outline should include two upper wings, two lower wings, a body, and antennae.

The design does not need to be perfect. Simple curved shapes work best and provide plenty of space for arranging natural materials.

2. Gather Natural Materials

Head outdoors to collect flower petals, leaves, and other small natural materials. Gardens, sidewalks, and grassy areas provide excellent materials.

Look for:

  • Bright petals in a variety of colors
  • Small leaves
  • Thin stems or grass pieces
  • Fallen blossoms from flowering shrubs

A small basket or bowl helps keep gathered materials organized during the craft.

3. Glue the Nature Pieces in Place

Begin gluing the found items onto the butterfly outline. A thin layer of glue will hold petals and leaves securely.

Press gently so the materials flatten against the cardboard surface. Continue working across the wings until the entire butterfly is filled with natural color.

4. Allow the Collage to Dry

Place the finished butterfly nature collage in a safe spot while the glue dries. Drying time usually takes around 30 to 60 minutes depending on the amount of glue used.

As the glue dries, the petals and leaves settle into the butterfly outline, creating a vibrant natural design.

5. Optional: Turn the Craft into Hanging Art

For a decorative finish, cut around the butterfly outline using scissors. Punch a small hole near the top of one wing and tie a piece of string or yarn through the hole.

Hang the butterfly near a window, on a bulletin board, or along a classroom wall for a colorful nature display.
