This backyard butterfly hunt activity is a fun way to get kids out into nature! Kids will “catch” butterflies and observe them using a magnifying glass.
● Before the activity, hide toy butterflies all around the yard. Tuck them into grass, flowers, bushes, and behind outdoor toys.
● Give each child a butterfly net and a magnifying glass.
● Explain that they are going on a butterfly hunt and should look carefully to spot the hidden butterflies.
● As they find each butterfly, they can gently “catch” it with their net.
● Encourage kids to use their magnifying glass to take a closer look at each butterfly’s colors and details.
● Keep hunting until all the butterflies have been found, or set a timer for an extra challenge.
